When the other person uses XChat to scan the QR code, are they unable to start a conversation with you?

2025-09-25 11:14:54 UTC

- reply

0xchat is based on NIP-17 and NIP-29. It’s feature-rich, with support for voice/video calls, Moments (notes), and a built-in eCash wallet.
XChat, on the other hand, is based on NIP-EE (nostr mls) and is designed to be simpler.
The reason we split them into two apps is because they target different user groups. 0xchat private chats lean more toward open — anyone can message you, and conversations can stay synced across multiple devices and clients.
XChat leans more toward private/closed — only people with an invite link can chat with you, and message sync across devices/clients is more difficult.

For native apps, it’s recommended to use a native signer for a better user experience — for example, Amber. There are also other signer apps like Aegis and Nowser.
For browser apps, you can just use a NIP-07 extension for login.

Thanks Joe for bringing this up. At this stage we’d prefer to stick with XChat, but will definitely keep your point in mind going forward

2025-09-23 04:04:30 UTC

- reply

Good point! XChat is set up with one relay per circle, but you can switch between circles (relays).
XChat is more focused on small, private groups, while White Noise seems to aim for larger crowds. That’s why XChat tries to use a single relay and keeps key packages away from the relay — we only share them via QR codes

We both use Nostr MLS, so the protocol-level security is essentially the same.
However, XChat has done more work on security at the app level, such as media encryption, encrypted local database storage, and two-way message/session deletion.

I agree. NIP-29 group chats are more like Telegram groups (though without encryption), while NIP-17 encrypted group chats are simple to implement but not convenient for managing group members, and suitable only for smaller groups.
MLS group chats are easier to manage group members and more suitable for larger groups, but the implementation is more complex.
The next version of 0xChat will implement MLS group chats, it will be in beta.

2025-05-16 14:42:29 UTC

- reply

Currently, 0xChat implements gift-wrapping notes and sending them to selected friends, which works well when the number of friends is small. However, if the number of friends is larger, it might be worth considering integrating an MLS group approach to handle this more efficiently.

Yes, exactly! The app doesn't depend on us running specific relays. This gives you the flexibility to use other relays or even set up your own if you prefer.

No worries.
Every time you make a voice or video call, you need to use Nostr relays (in this case, your general relays) for signaling communication.
