Celebrating the arrival of autumn with the cutting of the inaugural squash.
This Japanese blade has served me well for almost 20 years. I was a dirt poor teenager when I bought it; it cost me a week's wages and was the most valuable thing I owned for awhile. In the first year I owned it I dropped it and chipped the base of the handle. It didn't affect the functionality but has served as a timeless reminder to take care of my tools and treat them with respect.

Watching the miniseries "Lucky" with the wife right now. Passable crime thriller, but the treatment of bitcoin is interesting.
On the one hand, watching a guy go up to a series of ATMs and transform $10 million cash into bitcoin over the course of a one minute montage is a tad fanciful.
On the other hand, watching him stare down the barrel of the gun and say "if you kill me, the seed phrase dies with me 'cause it's in my fuckin' head" was a nice touch.

As an employee at an established electrical contractor, there are some tools that I use every day and am expected to purchase myself (pliers, multimeter, etc).
Other more specialized (and often expensive) tools that only get used every now and then are usually bought and owned by the company. This is reasonable because if you only use something a couple of times a year, it is more efficient to just have one that gets passed around the various jobsites as needed. It would be unreasonable to expect every last employee to own, say, a tap and die set. They are expensive.
However, I like to own my own shit. I don't like borrowing, and I don't like sharing with others who don't treat tools with the same care and respect that I do. Company tools get trashed over time, it's just the way things go.
Thus, I was not required to buy this, but when society falls apart I'll be the guy who can cut his own threads, and maybe yours too, if you've got value to trade.
