Yeah, you need one anyway if you want to convert to EUR/USD and pay your suppliers. You simply can't expect merchants to run their own node.

I don’t really get this almost apathetic stance.
Empty mempool + reducing subsidy equals a problem right?
I honestly think it’s short sighted to not think about this issue and just cast it into the future.
Not arguing that we can get to a decisive answer or that it will become a problem, but labeling discussions about it as fear mongering is not productive imo.

Yeah good question. The thing that I don’t like is that I don’t have a say: if somebody just pays the zap he will be visible. I’m not a slave, I like to choose my sponsors. That’s what I can do on other platforms. And if ads are played before my videos it’s clear that they are ads, it’s just a little less in your face. That’s maybe my second problem, that it’s just too much like the old world: ads ads ads ads everywhere.
That being said, with some tweaks it could be a pretty dope business model.

Yeah, we (Satoshi Radio podcast community) did exactly that.
We forked CKpool, made our own front end and ordered 365 BitAxes (as a community).

Same goes for getting sponsors and ads, that’s not my point.
The point is that when you get critical mass, ads and sponsors are way more profitable than donations.

Let’s make it easy and leave any taxes out of the calculation and take a monthly income of EUR 3.000 as our baseline.   This means:
- 10.000 donations of 30 cents.
- 1.000 donations of EUR 3
- 100 donations of EUR 30
I think the out of 100 listeners, only 1 to 5 donate (my experience in my own podcast). Let’s take the upper bound of 5 for this example. So for every listener that donates, you have 19 that don’t donate. This means to get to 1.000 donations of EUR 3, you need a total crowd of 20.000 listeners.   There are not that many bitcoin podcasts that get to that level. And the point is, once you get to that level you can easily get ads for EUR 1.000 per episode (CPM of EUR 50). If you make 4 episodes a week this means you get EUR 4.000 a month.

Zapping a few sats on NOSTR or donating to your favorite podcast on Fountain are very cool technical achievements.
But those few cents are not enough for the creator to make a living.
Maybe it works for the biggest voices on NOSTR, but the rest of us are still dependent on ads and sponsors.

Last month we sold 365 BitAxes and made our own mining pool for solo miners.
Little did we know that we where the only solo-pool based in Europe, which makes our pool the lowest latency, zero fee mining pool around. We are currently at 50 TH/s of pure pleb mining.

I worry about mining pool centralization. The mining industry has grown to an almost incomprehensible scale, and I don't have a perfect solution for this issue.
However, I know for sure that education is essential for any solution. The BitAxe is the perfect device for that purpose.
It looks cool, is affordable, and is a 'real' miner. When people plug in their BitAxe, they immediately understand how tiny their share of the network is.
That's why I decided to sell the BitAxe to my community. It's not about making a profit (given the volatility, I barely break even), but about giving people the chance to learn about mining.
We sold 355 BitAxes in a week.
Next, we're setting up our own mining pool. The ultimate goal is to mine a block, but the chances are negligible, even with 355 BitAxes.
Anyway, it's a very fun project. I'll keep you posted.

"Look Mom, I built something!"
I'm working on a project to sell 100 BitAxes to our podcast community. The goal is to connect each of us to our own @npub1wtg…sxp2 instance.
My aim is to keep things simple. I’ve designed a straightforward page where customers can enter their address, specify the quantity they want, and settle the invoice with Bitcoin. No frills, just a smooth user experience.
I also wanted to try coding with Cursor AI and Aider, which are agentic coding tools that help you write code.
This was also an excellent time to connect the @npub1ex7…vyt9 API to my @npub155m…dcvg.  The outcome is pretty cool. In one evening, I built the webpage, connected it to the BTCPay API to generate an invoice, stored the customer data in the BTCPay database, and added the STRIKE API.
I tested it in the video below. You can see that I paid the invoice using @npub1xnf…lpr5 connected to my node. The sats appear instantly in my Strike wallet. I can even choose to receive them in fiat if I want to.
This is just one of the many possibilities at the moment. With more and more people and companies building on Lightning, the potential for innovation is limitless.  As @npub1cn4…3vle said, You can’t beat open source.

This is really cool, but for a non technical person difficult to run.
I use the same setup by the way, it is perfect for running BTCpay and LNbits without exposing your home IP.
Umbrel has a Cloudflare app, which basically does the same but with a graphical interface.

In have a small spinning turntable. Framed my shot, put the trezor on the turntable and got one clean 360 spin. Removed everything from the frame to get a clean clip of the background.
Used Davinci Resolve to mask out the turntable.

I made my own bitcoin donation bot on Telegram. Listeners of my podcast can use it to donate some sats and send us a message, which we can read in the podcast.
We already had this for years, but it was build by a really talented developer (@npub17e2…ks6p) and it was like magic to me.
With the AI tools that are on the market right now I was able to make it myself. The code is probably thrash compared to the earlier bot, but the fact that I could make it myself was a magical feeling.
Working with these tools (Aider + Claude 3.5) feels like having a senior developer sitting next to you. It can see my codebase, make changes and commit those changes to git.
The bot works as follows: the user uses the donate command and is prompted to put in a donation amount (or use the buttons). After that, the user can choose to attach a message. This information is then send to my LNbits server and pulls a invoice. The bot starts polling for the invoice to be completed. When the user completes the payment a succes message is sent and the donation is forwarded to the main podcast chat and stored in our database.
It is so much fun to finally be able to turn some of the ideas I have into reality (and also finally ‘learn’ how to code in the process).

Little side project: a $30 bitcoin ticker for on my desk.
I have been working on it this weekend and it's pretty fun what you can achieve with some time (and ChatGPT):

- Shows the price, 24h change, block height and fee rate. Font color of the price is red when 24h change is negative, green when it is positive.

- Made a second screen showing the fee environment. It shows fast, medium and low fee. It also shows the mempool status (based on fee rate): Good (green), OK (orange) and Bad (red).

- Third screen is about the block fees versus total reward. It shows the average reward per block (for the last 144 blocks). It also shows the average fee per block and calculates the fee/subsidy ratio. Lastly it shows if the fee ratio is good (green) or bad (red).

- I added a Welcome screen during startup while the API's are fetching the data.

- I added an Exit screen when the script is stopped (you can do this by pushing the x button).
- All buttons work and can be used to cycle through the screens or to break the loop (so you can connect the pi to your laptop to update).
- I use the Coingecko and @npub18d4…6lt3 API to fetch the data. You can easily adjust the polling interval. When the data is fetched, the led turns red.
