What if you care more about the building being insulated, than about whether the walls are full of asbestos @npub18e2…3a5c?
What if you care more about travelling to a distant city, than about the huge carbon output of the transport?
What if you care more about the slinky dress for tonight's party, than about the child labour used to manufacture it and the enormous landfill encouraged by fast fashion?
What then?

Yeah. My current approach is:
* Set strict policy on projects where I have authority
* Speak firmly but compassionately with those peers I hope can see reason
* Occasionally slap down some AI booster in a public forum, for catharsis and spreading the message
* Let the rest go, the whole mess is founded on heavily-subsidised proprietary LLMs and those will be utterly unaffordable when the money runs out and the debts come due. Soon.

> My projects remain slop-free at this point in time, and it is my intention that they stay that way. […] Cursory glance at Pypy, […] Is it good enough for a fork? Did I miss something?
It's necessary that there be no slop commits *today*, but not sufficient.
What's needed is a strong public commitment from the codebase maintainers that *no AI slop will be permitted* into the codebase.

Some suggestions @npub1faz…vc22:
* It may be good to begin a fork over on Codeberg https://codeberg.org/ or similar service that respects user freedom; GitHub has long been in decline with regard to user freedoms.
* I tried to figure out how to build the application from source, but the instructions in the repository are very lacking. That will likely be a good starting point: include (in the repository) detailed instructions for people new to the code base, exactly how to build it from source.

I just received a #Scam email from a #TypoSquatter. Sender: noreply@pypj.org
They're hoping I don't notice the typo for #PyPI (the #Python package index), and asking me to “follow this link to verify your email address”.
Don't follow the link, just mark the message as spam and delete it.
Be careful out there.

IMO if any programming language needs a specific IDE, someone has made a terrible mistake.
The best IDE is the Unix (#GnuLinux) shell and all the workflow tools available there, with a powerful *general-purpose* programmer's editor like #Vim or #Emacs.
Because programming typically involves writing *many* different languages in a single project. So we need the powerful shell and editor that has a huge community contributing features regardless of what language I'm editing.

Explanation: Number literals have different types in those different languages.
In #JavaScript, a literal sequence of digits evaluates as a 'number', which is a limited-precision floating-point number.
js> 36342608503257322 == 36342608503257320
true
In #Python, a literal sequence of digits evaluates as an 'int', which is an infinite-precision integer number.
py> 36342608503257322 == 36342608503257320
False

Right on, @npub1dt0…pmw4.
With how far the DOM and CSS have come in recent decades, the *useful* #JavaScript of the past that is still needed today? Vanishingly small, most of it should be discarded without any negative experience for the user.
If the site is actually an app (and too many sites are designed by people who think they're making an app, when they should be making an information site), then yes JavaScript is needed.
Which leaves only the pointless or user-hostile crap. Junk it all.

Accessibility is one concern, and you're quite right @npub1dt0…pmw4 that #JavaScript improvements should make it more accessible to users with special needs. (Which, we should realise, is most of us if we live long enough.)
That's not the only concern, though. An informational website with no JavaScript loads faster, runs better on lower-powered devices, is easier to test, is easier to maintain.
And a big one: It's far safer from #SurveillanceCapitalism when we turn off JavaScript on a site.

I disagree @npub1dt0…pmw4.
If we're talking about a web *app*, you're correct that normally requires #JavaScript.
But not every web *site* is a web *app*, nor should they be. Loads of web sites are providing information and should not do anything more, and should work *without* JavaScript enabled. Interactivity? Try all the power of CSS.
Loads of people go to loads of web sites just *looking to get information*, and will be a lot safer turning off JavaScript because it's just not needed.

> I often read that Mastodon is too complicated for “normal” people.
It's worth questioning that statement a little, to find out *what* the specific person finds to be too complicated.
When I've done so, it doesn't seem to be about the sign-up process (easy enough) or the user interface.
No, what they seem to describe is: Twitter and Instagram and Facebook just immediately start shoving posts in my face, whatever choices I make. But Mastodon doesn't do that, and that confuses me.

And there it is: @npub1rvd…m6kr loses its Advocacy division, and the #OpenWeb loses what was once a champion.
“We’re revisiting how we pursue that work, not stopping it” says the Mozilla Foundation. Oh yeah, laying off workers is “revisiting” how to do the work, all right.
#MozillaCorp is nakedly a profit-seeking #SurveillanceCapitalism promotional body today.

Much love for @npub1w5a…zp7v. He's working hard for a while now to #GetFediHired, receiving rejections like the rest of us, but spending the extra effort to succinctly describe and pass along promising opportunities for others.
That kind of generosity and "well it didn't work out for me but I hope you, stranger, can get something good", gives me hope for the #FreeSoftware community.

The #AfferoGPL (#AGPL) with its requirement that any network service using licensed software must offer, to the same network user, the #CorrespondingSource to modify and build and redistribute the same software
is so much more needed now. Demand the #SoftwareFreedom that any network service must be #FreeSoftware anyone can fork as needed, end their artificial monopolies of our online lives.

A roughly 500 MiB /boot partition is normal, in my experience.
There needs to be sufficient room for at least two sets of boot-time files: the known-good kernel and files, plus the just-installed kernel and files. That way, you can boot the just-installed kernel, and if it fails, fall back to the previous known-good kernel and files.
If your initramfs has grown so large, it might be time to consider stripping it back (fewer drivers?), or increasing the /boot partition size.
