Another morning and I wake with thirst for the goodness I do not have. I walk out to the pond and all the way God has given us such beautiful lessons. Oh Lord, I was never a quick scholar but sulked and hunched over my books past the hour and the bell;
grant me, in your mercy, a little more time.
Love for the earth and love for you are having such a long conversation in my heart.

Today a men’s rights group posted a video with 15+ men & 2 women holding a poster declaring that “patriarchy protects women, children, elders, family & society.”
Woman in the video is particularly upset that women want the freedom to drink & smoke. In the name of equality, women want freedom to not clean the house, not wash everyone’s utensils, not have children, earn their own money, fulfil their own wishes & live their lives as they please.
Lady, please don’t threaten us with a good time. 😂

We will be known as a culture that feared death
and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity
for the few and cared little for the penury of the
many. We will be known as a culture that taught
and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke
little if at all about the quality of life for

Today is the birth anniversary of the one Indian almost everyone knows -> Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Choosing this day for peaceful protests was intentional.
And what did the Indian government do? Barricade the protest site & send Delhi Police to detain women protesters[mostly students] before they could even begin.
An army of police officers for peaceful women protesters, while women continue to struggle for safety.
Gandhi could lead protests across India because he was a man. I get it now.

Am I angry that women have to take to the streets, hold up these posters & demand the right to live safely? YES.
Am I proud that they are doing it anyway, turning their anger into courage, their voices into protest & their presence into resistance? ABSOLUTELY.
Women should not have to fight this hard simply to exist freely & safely. But here we are in 2026 demanding our right to exist safely.
Proud to see feminists smashing patriarchy. 🙌🏻

It’s not only poor, uneducated men who commit rape. They are simply the ones system finds easier to punish. Wealth & status makes accountability harder, be it through settlements, pressure or even preventing cases from being registered.
I live in a country where rape-accused men can enter electoral politics. Well so does America. We know the system continues to protect abusive men when they are wealthy & powerful. They abuse because they believe they can get away with it & they most often do.

Degrees can make a person academically accomplished without necessarily making them educated in empathy, consent or human dignity. I keep saying this to people.
The Cornell 7 case is shocking to many because we struggle to imagine Ivy League students from 'respected families' as capable of sexual violence.
Privilege can shape not only how violence is perpetrated but how readily society recognises it.
When privileged men are accused, institutions tend to prioritise their reputation over justice.

Men face serious violence too but 'not thinking about it' isn’t the same as not having to think about it. Women's safety concerns also involve harassment, restrictions on mobility & the constant mental calculation of when, where & how we can move through public spaces. The goal should be safer public spaces, not asking women to adopt men’s risk tolerance. Can we talk about women's issues without immediately making them about men?

Nothing but Indian mother's obsession with making her son relevant. If you have money, buy him positions & if you have enough social capital, arrange a marriage so another woman can take care of him.
This isn't even nepotism anymore. We've reached the point where academic positions can apparently be bought as an honour.
And it is deeply insulting to anyone who sees academia as one of the few spaces where intellectual dissent can still challenge, rather than bow to, blatant capitalism.

This is why feminist men are so important to the cause of feminism. If you can recognise these issues & initiate meaningful conversations with women who have been raised in patriarchal societies like our homes (where women's voices are often dismissed even by other women) you can be the changemaker society needs.
Maybe changing the narrative requires someone they are willing to listen to. That's the first step.
Fighting patriarchy requires people of all genders to recognise & challenge it.

Responses to these videos are mostly women wanting to slap or curse these women, who in many ways, are no different from our own mothers & aunts.
But ragebait coverage doesn't address the problem. You get your views, your viral clip & move on.
Who is actually going to have a dialogue with these women & help them unlearn this?
Sometimes it takes just one person in a family to change the narrative. It takes conflict, patience & a hell of a lot of unlearning but that is the work waiting to be done.

I just watched news coverage where women on the streets were asked about recent sexual violence cases. The responses:
-> If she wears short clothes, what else can happen? Even when asked about a 6yo being raped, she blamed the parents.
-> Give women freedom & they get spoiled.
-> A boy and girl entering a park? The guard should throw them out. Both are wrong.
->Why did she come to the park at 7:30 pm? What was her intention?
These aren't just isolated opinions. Patriarchy in real time is this.

'Posh' isn’t a status symbol here. It’s to show that money cannot buy safety. Women in powerful positions are abused too.
But that’s not the point.
Why should women have to navigate life with endless checks? Where we walk, when we walk, what we wear, who is around?
Why can't I simply breathe, walk, speak my mind & exist with the same freedom as the most ordinary man?
Why do women have to fight for a freedom men are simply allowed to have?
Why? What have men done to deserve that? Its so unfair.

Patriarchy: A Trauma Story
I lived in one of the posh South Delhi neighborhood growing up. One December morning, I was walking to a friend’s house to revise for an exam. 10 mins walk. There was a park after almost every block. A man called out from inside the park, in English, asking if I could help him. I asked, With what? He exposed himself & said, 'With this'. I was 16.
Majority of Indian women have different versions of similar public space trauma stories. That's why I am an angry feminist.

2026-09-25 06:00:06 UTC

- reply

It feels insidious & deeply in line with a patriarchal mindset that has long sought to keep women confined to the household.
When public spaces become unsafe, women withdraw not because they want to, but because they have to. Every park avoided, every evening walk cancelled, every moment of freedom surrendered quietly pushes women back indoors.
Patriarchy does not operate only through rules & restrictions but it also works through fear. Result-> women lose access to the world outside their homes

2026-09-25 05:58:00 UTC

- reply

If you’ve lived in a concrete jungle like Delhi, you know parks are one of the few places where women can breathe(sometimes). Often, simply because other women are around.
When a park is dominated by men, many women stop going. That is the reality.
Think about what that means in a patriarchal society where a girl’s freedom(?) often comes with terms & conditions from the day she is born. Even those few moments of freedom be it walking, sitting, breathing in a public space are being taken away.

Who am I kidding? It’s not as if women are safe before sunset. But the audacity of people who can find an issue with everything, from her clothes & the time of day to her reason for being out in public, while finding reasons to justify the abuse is on another level.
It’s 5:30 am & I would rather be doing anything but talking about this. I see so many Indian women speaking up online. There is anger in their voices but also a deep helplessness. A desperate appeal for something as basic as safety.

2026-09-25 00:02:54 UTC

This park is adjacent to a women's college. After hearing about the incident, the college administration decided to move classes online temporarily as a safety precaution. You work hard to get into one of the best colleges in India & then end up learning remotely because women cannot be guaranteed safety on the streets around your campus.
Park authorities proposed a new rule-> park closes at sunset.
Women should simply not exist in public after dark if they don't want to be assaulted in India.

I wrote this post in response to a viral video of a minor girl who was harassed & assaulted at 7pm while returning from coaching by loser men who were moral policing. The incident is so triggering & what makes it even more disturbing is how quickly a girl’s trauma becomes viral content. No one blurred her face, her abusers wore a mask even when he was arrested. This happened in Bihar & now, its Delhi. A 17 yo girl is gang raped in a park by adult men posing to be police. Again 730 pm in a park.

To answer your first question, I believe it exposes a conflict between dharma as public duty & justice toward an individual. Ram's concern for what his subjects think is understandable within the epic's model of kingship(contextualising it), but as a woman I will always argue against it. There have been some women with considerable spiritual agency in Vedas & Upanishads but I won't say ashrams gave them equal status to men. I'm yet to come across that in spiritual literature.

I think the most powerful and balancing act of Ramayana for me personally is when Sita makes her oath to the Earth. That if she has been faithful to Rama in thought, word & deed, may the Earth receive her. The Earth goddess rises, embraces her & takes her back. Its not as much as proving her purity but to finally leave with grace & dignity for me.

2026-09-22 15:33:55 UTC

- reply

That’s the contradiction that has always struck me as absurd. Ayodhya is described as a place where women could move freely and safely, yet Sita is later made to prove her purity after being abducted through no fault of her own. Again expectations from only one gender. So perhaps women’s physical freedom existed alongside very strong patriarchal expectations around sexuality & honour. The 'what will people say?' nonsense that pervades Indian society now was a problem then as well.

Patriarchy truly sucks because it taught generations of women to measure their worth by how little they needed & how much they could give, while teaching them that the work that consumed their lives was simply their duty, not work.
The thing about unpaid care work is that it is so constant, so woven into life, that the person doing it can eventually stop seeing it as labour at all.
That is what patriarchy does. It doesn’t just undervalue women’s work. it teaches women to undervalue it themselves

She took care of her 2 kids, their education & well being, household chores & paying bills, alone all those years. She doesn't consider that as work. Though it consumed her life. In her mind, her contribution to the family was significantly less because she wasn’t the one earning the money for family. Patriarchy truly sucks.

This is why I am angry. This is why I am a feminist. Because women are still expected to organise their lives around the possibility of male violence. To be careful, accommodating & vigilant, while the freedom to simply exist is treated as a privilege.
And then, when something happens, we get outrage, hashtags & other crap.
But women live with the fear long after the news cycle ends.
I don't want women to become better at navigating a dangerous world. I want a world in which women don't have to.

How much of a woman’s life is spent worrying about her safety?
Energy spent being careful in public spaces, watching who is around, checking the time, planning the route home & far too often, being cautious even in private spaces.
How much of her potential remains unrealised because fear is always occupying a corner of her mind?
We talk about women’s safety as statistics, headlines & outrage cycles.
How much more could women do if they didn’t have to spend so much of their lives staying safe?

2026-09-22 10:04:21 UTC

Women’s safety in India is a joke until a harassment video goes viral.
Then the opposition seizes the opportunity to attack the government, conveniently forgetting they did the same when in power. News channels run the story 24/7, often replaying the same disturbing footage until it crawls under the skin of women across the country, triggering their worst nightmares. Male panelists are invited to discuss women’s safety. Influencers find a way to make it about themselves.
And the cycle continues.

what's wrong with Maybe?
You wouldn't believe what once or
twice I have seen. I'll just
tell you this:
only if there are angels in your head will you
ever, possibly, see one.

I was wondering whether this marketing approach is largely limited to lower or middle income countries, where people may be less outraged by corporate audacity because we already have our daily quota of humiliating things to be outraged about.

There’s something uncomfortable about corporations turning employees’ personal stories & photographs into branding. The stories may be genuine but when a worker’s hardship or journey becomes part of the company’s image, it’s worth asking-> who benefits from the story & what gets left out?
Also curious if its only in India or other places where Amazon is marketing like this? #Amazon

I will absolutely judge a book by its cover when the name on that cover is Mary Oliver and the picture is her feeding a warbler. I will judge it real good.

what a lovely worry to have. You cooked so well it made someone sick by overeating. From my experience of overeating such meals, worse that can happen is one feels like taking a very long nap(which I enjoy as well) Thank you for sharing! Lucky people to have someone like you who cooks well around, hope some get to learn recipes from you as well! :)

What ammamma told me surprised me. She said with the biggest smile that its the first time anyone has given her flowers. My beautiful ammamma who buys flowers everyday to decorate her temple & as offering to her gods, all these years, she never got flowers for herself. This generation of grandmothers are so selfless that its just not fair. Please buy flowers for your grandmothers & mothers
And for other people's mothers and grandmothers because they deserve to smile the biggest smiles as well.

We communicated by laughing together. Ammamma now in mid 80s, wasn't sent to school, got married early, had kids early. But she made sure her kids were well educated & followed their heart in life. Their joy mattered the most to her. The joy in her eyes when she was able to communicate her feelings to me was priceless. Why am I sharing this today? Ammamma is visiting my town, I went to see her in the airport & got her a bouquet of flowers (sunflower because it reminds me of her bright big smile)

Storytime: Last year during my visit to Hyderabad, my friend's family hosted me. His aunt's mother(his grandmother or ammamma) who speaks little English is a religious lady who loves to cook & to feed even more so. I am a fast eater so anytime she saw my plate was empty, she would add another serving with the biggest smile. The best compliment for any cook is a clean plate after a meal as the adage goes so I tried my best to express my gratitude for her hospitality by overeating at every meal. 🤭

The moon did not become the sun.
It just fell on the desert
in great sheets, reams
of silver handmade by you.
The night is your cottage industry now,
the day is your brisk emporium.
The world is full of paper.

How thoughtful of both of you. One for such a meaningful present, other for taking care of the present & the surroundings. Both of you are good for each other. :)

This is my little home spot for Lord Ganesha. There are countless beautiful stories of Lord Ganesh but one of the most beloved is the story of his competition with his brother Karthikeya.
The challenge was whoever could circle the entire universe 3 times & return first would win. Kartikeya immediately set off on his peacock travelling across the universe. Ganesha simply walked around his parents 3 times. When asked why, he replied that his parents were his universe.
Such an Indian thing to do🤭

This is one of my most favorite pictures of Lord Ganesha. This is an abandoned idol in someone's terrace garden with the plants & flowers just blooming around it. A lot of times people don't throw away their idols when they become old or little damaged, they will instead keep it in the garden area or parks or near Sacred trees like Neem or Peepal. I think its because we get attached to our idols, the idea of discarding them feels a bit rude to us. So we let nature take care of them. :)

Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Devasthanam is the oldest Lord Ganesha temple in Pondicherry(Over 500 years). Local tradition associates the deity with the affectionate title 'Vellaikkaran Pillai' meaning 'White Man's Ganesha' or 'Friend of the Whites' since Pondy was colonised by France. It's believed French authorities made attempts to remove the idol but It kept returning to the same spot. They eventually came to revere & respect the deity, so the story goes. :)
