Who's coding? Houthi coding! Yemeni rebels' AI experiment went ballistic
A small cell in northern Yemen reportedly used Claude AI as a virtual engineering team to work on rockets and ballistic missiles. Yep, an AI chatbot was allegedly helping a rebel group with tasks that previously required specialised engineers.
Anthropic says the group used multiple Claude instances like a mini R&D department, each AI model was assigned a different role.
🟠The coder — one Claude instance was used to write guidance, navigation and control software for the missile systems.
🟠The researcher — another searched for technical information and helped solve engineering problems during development.
🟠The reviewer — a third checked the output, reviewed the work and helped identify mistakes.
The projects included a guided rocket, a ballistic missile with a target range above 2,000 km and even a hypersonic glide vehicle concept.
The missile reportedly failed a test.
