It is definitely gripping, but man, it’s a workout! It’s packed with data and feels a bit like a textbook in parts, but the insights into why societies fail (or choose not to) are worth the effort. Think Guns, Germs, and Steel but with a lot more footnotes.
If you liked GGS, you’ll definitely recognize the style—it’s that same sweeping 'Big History' lens. It’s a great read, though a bit more of a 'data dump' than I expected. It feels a bit like a college research project at times, but the survival case studies are fascinating.
