He gets by on $15K/year. $1M invested in one single ETF that is readily available to everyone gives you $33.2K/year in income. Even after taxes, he's got a better than 50% safety margin that can go into savings to cover emergencies. Once an emergency fund is established, that safety margin plus the growth in dividends the fund pays should more than handle inflation.
You can earn better than a 3.32% yield fairly easily, but you take on more risk by doing so and there's no need in this case.
