I'm Catholic. We believe we should honor our father and mother -- that is, to honor them in a special way, more than others.

But Mary is the mother of Jesus, and by extension she is our mother, too. ("Behold, your mother," said Jesus on the Cross.)

So we honor her in a much greater way then our uterine mother. But this kind of reverence is by no means the worship that is due to God alone.
