Yeah, that write up is what led me to understand a more generalized view on it, that costs for anything must be borne by those who benefit from where those costs go, in proportion to their benefit, or perverse incentives occur. Without it I don't think I'd have understood this about bitcoin mining. That article is probably the cornerstone of my understanding of incentives and human organization.
