Since joining the fire department I’ve learned a new acronym. H.O.N.D.A.
Hypertensive
Overweight
Non-compliant
Diabetic
Ass hole
In our little county of 14000 people there are several calls a week for middle aged people: shortness of breath, heart attack, stroke, diabetic emergency, etc.
Every time I get there I always hear the same thing “I have a family history…” It’s so hard for me not to say… no, ass hole, you have a family history of poor diet and no exercise. The last time you ran a lap was in high school and everything you eat comes wrapped in plastic.
Seeing that regularly helps keep me motivated. If I miss a workout or have a strong desire to eat something bad for me because of a fire call or work responsibly I’ll go to the gym in the middle of the night or go home and cook up a nice ribeye instead of going to Waffle House with the rest of the crew.
I stress the fact that I’m not going to be on every call and no one is going to be there to pull them out if there is a collapse.
