I’m assuming you meant ‘self interest and “greater good” can’t* align’. And if this is the case, I’d say this is another case of boiling decision making into a false dichotomy

Is it not altruism for bitcoin core (or any other implementation) maintainers to sacrifice higher salaries to work on bitcoin? Who are they virtue signaling to? For example, the whole time where knots proponents were saying “core maintainers don’t even hold/own bitcoin”, it showed me that many can’t fathom that a person could bring themselves to work on something because it truly interests them (rather than enriches them). Maintainers care about the longevity of the network health with the goal to have bitcoin recognized as the best human construct we can use as immutable information (aka hard money standard)

Austrian economics is nice to understand, but it was also established over 100 years ago & relies on a specific set of assumptions that no longer apply today given our globalized reliance on other humans that don’t “align” ideologically
