Elephants in Hindu religion & mythology have its own relevance. Lord Ganesha is our beloved elephant headed deity who is worshipped before any other deity. In southern India, elephants are used in festivals for temple processions which wasn't so common in north. One of the first temples I visited in south had Lakshmi, this beloved elephant was loved by all the locals who would come to get her blessings. She passed on a few years back I still believe elephants belong in their natural habitat.
