Finally got around to de-sooting the stove top which sounds like something from Victorian times but is in fact because my stove sits under the original chimney and in heavy rain the chimney drops a lot of soot down.
Used to keep a tea towel over it when not in use, but the brother and SIL disapproved so now it's just a case of cleaning it after heavy rain.
