I'd say grow where you are currently planted, and start stacking your skills. Even in a city you can start gardening, making compost, tending smaller livestock, etc.
Get in touch with farms and ranches near town that specialize in whatever you're interested in and offer to workshare or do anything valuable to them (that doesn't take time from them). Harvesting, weeding, prepping for farmers markets, etc
You'll figure out which aspects of self sufficiency you enjoy and don't enjoy pretty quickly
