As the dust settles from the events of the 8th, I’ve been reflecting on where Bitcoin stands. Some are concerned that Bitcoin is already captured and that node operators have lost control, but I prefer a glass-half-full view. We won the block size war in 2017; this fight isn't over.
Supporting Luke Dashjr and others on the hard fork initiative is crucial to saving Bitcoin, but we need a multi-front approach. While Bitcoin isn't a democracy, perhaps a 20% consensus threshold is no longer sufficient to drive the changes we want. Did the previous BIP lack the teeth necessary to rally support? Was the conservative timeline—expiring in just a year—a turnoff? Personally, I thought the CAT proposal was a strong, compelling idea.
We need to attack this problem from every angle, including proposing new BIPs from the inside to curb spam and restore a sound-money culture. This project is simply too important to abandon. While I won't be buying more BTC in its current state—and plan to trim my holdings on pumps unless a real cultural shift occurs—we shouldn't give up just yet.
