I'm still Turtles pilled, so today I decided to go digging for issue #1 from 1984. You can borrow it on archive.org, if you have an account on the site.
It's amazing how fully formed all of this came out of Laird and Eastman. The first issue tells a compelling story, including the origin of the Turtles and Splinter. There have been many variations of this origin story over the years, but you can clearly see how little they've changed from the source material.
It took me a bit to adjust to the drawing style, but it looks awesome in black and white.
I highly recommend this to any Turtles fan. It only takes about 30 minutes to read the 40 pages and I think it's well worth it.
