Signal does a lot right, especially making encryption the default. But it still takes some trust on its centrally maintained servers to use it securely and privately. Once governments overreach (which they often do) we are at the mercy of Signal operators: their servers, their jurisdiction, and whatever choices they make when the pressure arrives.
However, running your own DeltaChat server on a VPS is trivial. You can set it up yourself or ask AI to set it up for you with the help of its documentation. Then you are not just using encrypted messaging. You are running the infrastructure too.
