I’ve always split my funds across multiple wallets, controlled by different seeds, generated by different hardware wallet brands.

This helps you avoid losing your lifelong savings in a single transaction, like you can see with the Coldcard exploit. Extremely frustrating, considering that most hardware wallet can generate/restore an unlimited number of seeds + passphrases.

It’s a good idea to add a strong passphrase to your seeds, at least 20 characters, including lowercase, uppercase, and special characters.

A lot of people use an easy-to-remember word or a sequence of words, maybe they are confused because seeds are words so they believe it's ok to use words for the passphrase.

DON'T DO THAT !

For your passphrase, you should use a random string of characters, exactly like a strong password generator. I recommend creating your passphrase with a password manager/generator and writing it down offline, separately from your seed backup!


Now, regarding which hardware wallets to use:

Blockstream Jade is a good place to start.

The Seedsigner is inexpensive but requires a bit more technical knowledge.

Ledger, Trezor, Bitbox, are among the oldest wallet brands on the market, and they have never had a seed hack or a serious firmware exploit like what we’ve been seeing over the past few days with coldcard.

( That said, Ledger had a data leak involving customer information, such as names, email addresses. From people who ordered on their official website. To avoid that, you can buy the device from an authorized retailer near you and pay in cash. )

Bitkey is newer, and I’ve seen some people recommend it here on Nostr, personally, I don’t know much about it.
