A dark web identity-theft site called Nexus claimed to provide searchable records for more than 150 million U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses and passports, allegedly taken from a major identity-verification provider. Security journalist Brian Krebs confirmed the data was authentic after finding his own driver’s license, and a Defense Department spokesperson said the agency was evaluating reports after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s image also appeared.
Krebs and researcher Zach Edwards identified IDScan as the likely source. The Louisiana-based company processes tens of millions of identity documents each month; its chief operating officer said it was investigating, while the FBI’s New Orleans field office is reportedly probing the incident. Nexus went offline after the report. If confirmed, the incident would be among the largest known single breaches of identity documents, highlighting the risks of age-verification systems that retain sensitive IDs.
