A new academic study published Oct. 8, 2026 finds that paid investment communities on Discord mainly enrich the influencers who run them, while most paying subscribers lose money once fees and trading costs are taken into account. Although many of these communities advertise large gains, the study shows that coordinated buying waves by followers tend to benefit the originators of the calls more than the retail participants.
Researchers examined trading patterns in subscription-based Discord groups and concluded that influencers capture value from the subsequent market impact of trades they prompt. By contrast, the majority of subscribers end up with net losses after subscription fees and execution costs.
