I was a pump jockey at a Mobil station in ‘73 when gas prices reached and exceeded $1/gal. The mechanical pumps topped out at .99, so the owner had us get “1” mail box stickers and set the pump price to just the cents in excess of $1. We had to take the gals pumped x $1 and add to the shown pump sale amount. We ALL were able to do this quickly and easily in our heads.
