NASA is developing a foresight approach to protect the continuity of Earth-observation data as missions, schedules and spacecraft lifetimes change. Lindsey Jacobson, a Pathways engineering intern at NASA’s Langley Research Center, works with the Earth Science Strategic Integration Environment team to model how disruptions across the satellite portfolio could affect scientific and operational users.
The team’s analysis identifies potential coverage gaps before they occur and gives senior leaders mitigation options, including alternative ways to satisfy end-user needs. The work accounts for missions that may be delayed or fail in orbit, while also recognizing that some spacecraft can operate beyond their planned lifetimes. Jacobson compares the strategy to preparing for hurricane season: keeping responses ready in advance means NASA is not forced to improvise when a warning arrives.
