Honestly I've never seen believable DAU's in excess of ~5-6k since I started using nostr 1.5 years ago, with the exception of a weird spike in late 2025 where it seemed (qualitatively) like a bunch of people just showed up and then subsequently left in early '26.
IDK man, I think young right-of-center techie types need to feel threatened by the US government in ways they aren't right now for Nostr to really cook again. The technical infrastructure is only getting better IMHO, people just need to see the value in it.
The ultimate competition is going to be Nostr vs Mastodon, and if anything I'd be more concerned about the latter, as it's much more of a "safe space" for anti-regime sentiment and yet all the "hashtag resistance" types are still fully enmeshed in "like and subscribe and follow me on insta" legacy social media.
The question is, who is Nostr "for" and why haven't those people left X?
