Agreed on all counts. Socialization becomes a distraction from the persistent fear and rumination. Plus genuine social interaction is an important part of being a healthy human.

I’ve known several elderly folk who went to assisted living and got much better after moving to an environment where they could socialize and where they had care from professionals when they needed it.

I could maybe convince my grandma to go to assisted care but she smokes 40 cigarettes a day and is totally unwilling and unable to stop. She had a caretaker years back but says she doesn’t want one now and that “no one” will take the job because she smokes so much.

She’s an expert at throwing up walls. But at this point she can barely walk, weighs 85 pounds, has massive chronic pain and anxiety and a bunch of other health conditions. She really won’t let me help her in any other way than socializing.
