Yes, I agree that other people could launch a liquid-like side chain and do a better job than blockstream. I'm not 100% sure of what license the elements project is under, but it may be a really good time for someone to fork it.
I actually am a fan of the wallets, like Aqua and Bull Bitcoin, which use liquid at rest and lightning for payments and Bitcoin for cold storage. It's a very powerful and useful architecture.
