NASA’s Integrated Medical Model (IMM) is a decision-support system designed to prepare crewed missions to the Moon and Mars for the medical risks of long-duration spaceflight. It combines decades of flight records and clinical research from NASA’s Integrated Medical Evidence Database with Monte Carlo simulations of thousands of possible mission scenarios.
The model evaluates more than 100 conditions, including radiation sickness, decompression sickness, space motion sickness, infections and kidney stones. It estimates total medical events, crew functional capacity, treatment and recovery time, evacuation or loss-of-crew risk, and required supplies. These projections help flight surgeons and engineers design medical kits and self-sufficient care systems when deep-space communication delays and the lack of rapid evacuation make Earth-based support impractical.
