The .com boom was a disaster, both the rise and the fall. It made an enormous amount of damage to people who were actually trying to do real work, and sucked out all of the air (twice) for anyone not inventing wildly unrealistic business plans.
Java and C++ less so, but their hype also made a lot of damage, and still does.
