Agreed. I call it "The Paradox of the Hobbyist" in which catering to a relatively small group which never buys in volume with documentation and support for a device, results in higher sales volumes and design wins for that same device.
I tried to explain it to Atmel once that some hobbyist on the net explaining this cool project they did with your part gets way more exposure to engineers than an article in EE Times does.
