Galileo has achieved its first real-world civilian position fix using its upcoming Signal Authentication Service (SAS) under spoofing conditions. On 16 September, five operational Galileo satellites transmitted a new encrypted signal over Europe for two hours. Receivers at Andøya, Norway, and ESA’s ESTEC navigation laboratory in the Netherlands successfully determined their position from that signal during the Jammertest exercise, where Norwegian authorities deliberately broadcast jamming and spoofing scenarios.
SAS authenticates encrypted ranging signals and will complement Galileo’s Navigation Message Authentication service, operational since 2025, which verifies the origin of navigation data. Together, they are designed to help receivers detect and reject a broad range of spoofing attacks. The European Commission defined the service concept, while ESA and EUSPA developed the architecture and updated the satellites and ground infrastructure. Validation and accreditation are planned for next year; both authentication services are intended to be free and globally available.
