I suspect you may not be the most familiar with the buddhist concept of anatta, or 'not-self.'
Curious if you've encountered Thich Naht Hanh's book Living Buddha, Living Christ. He was a pure land buddhist, not Zen, but they share more in common than what differs.
It's true they don't talk about God, but when you're constantly peeling away that which appears to be self...idk man, I think there's more similarities that look different due more to matters of language than substance.
Trappings of course vary, but trappings are hardly unique to anu one traditon. Arguably these are the graven images we're warned about anyway.
Not saying go be a Zen monk of course. In most cases it makes sense to find your way in the tradition you're familiar with culturally, rather than being a religious tourist. I find it helpful to be able to speak to someone in the spiritual language they understand though.
