My few thoughts inspired by #Napstr and why projects like this matters:
What a prehistoric idea, but what a great one - you can upload music to #Napstr and there are no notifications telling you who and how many times downloaded your song or how many times listened to it (* it's just not displayed) you can simply upload something out of the desire to share.
Now you can see, by contrast, how modern social media have distorted this whole phenomenon. On Instagram, you post something and wait for either a comment, like,, share, etc. (not me, I have fewer than 1,000 followers... but you can see, again, I even mentioned followers now because this is what everyone there thinks about, which is "what can I get in return").
Everything is centered around identity, around building a brand, and brands are increasingly becoming us. We have turned ourselves into products.
Products for sale.
And on open source, this isn’t there, it is more about sharing something for the good of the community (and your own, of course) So for example: someone benefited from my songs - okay, cool. They didn’t benefit - also okay. They liked them, or they didn’t: it doesn’t really matter. It’s nice if someone benefited from them, if not, that’s also okay.
Social media feed our ego. Because the ego wants to fit us into some kind of framework, into a box, and preferably elevate us above others. There's so much comparison and judgement - "ooo that person has this amount of likes or followers" or "I can listen to XYZ person 'cause he's having lots of likes..." (which is weird way of marking social status anyway) as if people forget today that buying likes is polishinel' secrecy and its biggest Achilless' heel at the same time.
