I've asked many people, even from different provinces, "What has Canada actually done to benefit Alberta? Name just one thing!" they can't. Then I articulate that nationalism and patriotism is nothing more than a cultural norm and there is really no reason for it. Sure people died for our freedoms and whatnot, but that was a long time ago now and also the specific border today doesn't change much whether US or Canada or whatever. Then they will say they like our culture, then I will say that the people won't change just because we report to a different federal government. Idaho, California, Texas, Florida, Maine, Hawaii, Utah all have very different cultures. Also healthcare is provincial, so if provincial/state taxes stay high, they wouldn't need to change that too much either.
People are emotional and irrational.
