It annoys me when I see a headline like “for the first time women have a achieved X right”. That assumes that humanity has always been patriarchal, when in fact we’ve nearly always been egalitarian.

As best we can tell, hunter-gatherer tribes were mostly egalitarian, patriarchy didn’t begin until after agriculture, and we are now exiting that practice as it was largely brought on by strange logistics.

Patriarchy is actually not the norm for humanity, if you look at our ~250,000 yr history patriarchy or society built around a male oriented dominance hierarchy has only existed for ~3% of that.

Notes: Egalitarian as used above does not mean matriarchal, nor does it mean equal in all ways. It means a male oriented dominance hierarchy was absent and owning property and leadership were not male only roles.
