Personally, I'd recommend well over 6kWp. I've had a 5kWp/8kWh single-string south-facing setup for 6 years, and in the evening the air conditioning eats through the battery because there's still Sun, but it's too far west to reach the south panels. I'm expanding it for that reason too; I mainly need the power for the winters here (Alps) with few daylight hours, but even in sunny places, if the nights are hot and you need a/c at night, well... you need enough power to recharge about twenty kWh (from a battery with at least 30kWh capacity) on top of your daytime self-consumption.
