I generally like Proton, too, and I hear your concern.
I'm not a smartie, but what I do is use Thunderbird (Betterbird) with other email accounts and generate my PGP keys from there, so it's for sure E2E encrypted if the recipient uses PGP as well. Thunderbird makes PGP sooo easy ("regular" people ought to be using it, but they're too in love with the webmails). And any emails sent to a Proton address is automatically encrypted as well (Thunderbird finds the address's public key behind the scenes for you).
For various online accounts I make, I supply them with an addy.io alias address, and so any email I'm sent there comes to my personal email account encrypted, too, so my email provider can't read my content in those cases either. (I have to trust addy.io more than my email provider, which I do.)
