Proof of Bitcoin is a grassroots community initiative dedicated to building a real Bitcoin circular economy in Pretoria.
The project connects residents with local merchants who accept Bitcoin (often via Lightning), organizes regular meetups and educational sessions, and provides practical resources so people can earn, spend, and save in sats without constantly converting back to rand.
Key Objectives:
1. Build a true local circular economy — Create an environment where Pretoria residents can regularly earn and spend Bitcoin at nearby businesses, so sats stay in circulation instead of exiting the local economy.
2. Onboard and support Bitcoin-accepting merchants — Guide local entrepreneurs and shops on how to accept Bitcoin easily, list them so customers can find them, and help turn occasional acceptance into consistent real-world usage.
3. Educate and empower everyday users — Offer accessible meetups, guides, and sessions covering practical skills (wallets, Lightning payments, self-custody essentials, capital controls, and more) so beginners and experienced Bitcoiners alike can confidently use Bitcoin day-to-day.
4. Foster community collaboration and events — Host regular gatherings that bring entrepreneurs, merchants, and advocates together, while linking with other South African circular-economy projects.
5. Promote Bitcoin as practical money and a parallel system — Highlight how Bitcoin protects against inflation, lowers banking friction, and enables financial independence, encouraging people to move from “HODL only” to active spending and building.
