I think you've helped me locate the problem.
The cost of conversation is relatively easy to identify. Someone pays for the place, infrastructure and time.
What I don't know how to quantify is its value to the participants.
“Data” tells us what is exchanged, but not what the exchange was worth.
Maybe that's why social media ended up measuring attention and engagement instead.
