Derek said he has a relay that costs more than $50 a month to run and he's wondering if people would be willing to contribute towards operating costs (asking for charity)

People are responding with confusion because $50 a month seems like A LOT just to run a relay.

But it's not a normal dumb server type relay.
The server itself is doing a bunch of work to calculate wot instead of making people's phones do all that extra work
