Concur.
As said before, I was rising 5 when we got it...60 this month...and the
last place on the island to be connected was, I think, in 1975, my
granny and mother both said that having a water tap at the gate,
this was pre leccy, was amazing. Previous it had to be carried in
buckets to the house from the particular loch water was taken from,
then boiled and strained and all the rest of it. Having carried buckets
of water as a child, and that was only down the path, I can only
imagine! What made the biggest difference re the electric was
once people managed to acquire washing machines/spinners,
that was a colossal help to the women. My mother always said
the last thing you can take away from me re gadgets is the
washing machine, but especially the spinner...as separate then...
because honestly, it helped so much to have that. I agree, I could
live without electric but by God, I would miss the washing machine,
and of course, I would have to be somewhere that I had access to
the Rayburn or something similar again.
I notice himself gets extremely jumpy and unsettled the odd time
we have had a power cut, but it doesn't have much effect on me,
past hoping isn't a long one because of things in freezer. He is
townie though, so an ignorant article 😆 What is annoying me now
is the new BT bullshit re the landlines, because even with their stupid useless meant to be backup box thingy it gives you very little time before it packs in too. So as many places rurally have shite mobile signals, you're screwed if you need help, we still have the landline precisely because the signal is atrocious here. It's really not good, IDIOTS!
