According to Wiki he's done it all legitimately, with one major caveat. He travelled through Alaska and Siberia in winters, when the Bering Strait and the many rivers are frozen.
The caveat is that he has had many interruptions due to visa issues and weather (summer in the Arctic), and during those he would travel in vehicles to other places, and then return later to resume walking.
