Typically toslink or other audio interface to serial converters output left-justified words, left-justified with a leading padding bit, or I2S. None of those are directly compatible with SPI, which requires SS low to shift in the bits, but the latter two formats allow using the channel clock edge as a word clock: by pulling SS low one tick after OLRCK edge, and then high again after 16 ticks, the SDOUT and OSCLK work as SPI MOSI and SCK. This can be trivially implemented with fixed logic.
