NASA has awarded SpaceX three additional crew missions to the International Space Station, designated Crew-15, Crew-16, and Crew-17. The contract modification is intended to maintain regular crew transportation and NASA’s access to the station through 2030, while preserving two commercial crew providers, SpaceX and Boeing. SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket can carry up to four astronauts and critical cargo per mission.
The firm-fixed-price modification is worth $946 million and covers ground operations, launch, in-orbit activities, return and recovery, cargo transportation, and a lifeboat capability while Dragon is docked. It brings SpaceX’s total Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contract value to $5.92 billion and the planned mission count to 17. The award follows a May notice of intent; NASA certified SpaceX for crew transportation in November 2020.
