Perhaps the people who made the golden calf aren't really Gods favorites anymore but rather a people forever cursed with a thirst for gold.

The passage of Moses grinding the golden calf to a powder, mixing it with water and making "his people" drink it, seems like some Satanist ritual.

I think God was done with them at that point. Go make Golden Calf, drink gold powder, smash the stone tablets with my commands....
