During 1941, decrypted messages were intercepted ordering Japanese diplomats in Washington to get rid of secret material and documentation and even a detailed drawing of the port of Pearl Harbor made by a Japanese consul was seized.
After the carpet-bombing of Tokyo in March 1945, which killed over 100,000 people, the Japanese offered to surrender, on the condition they kept their emperor Hirohito.
