Thankfully my parents asked and valued my opinion after we watched the testimonial DVD of a bunch of braindead zombies saying "yes, it really changed my life" while barely being able to speak a ten-word sentence in under 30 seconds.
I consider myself lucky only having some severe extrapyramidal side effects from antipsychotics which lasted a decade.
