A distributed digital IDs with keys in a smart card, FLOSS on open hardware is good, a centrally managed one by private parties is just a suicide.

But in a digitalised world we need digital IDs anyway. Digital euro could actually be a good idea: central bank digital currency are the sole "real fiat money" as opposite to fractional reserve scriptural bank money, banks and fintech are worse than central banks for many aspects. Again the issue here is which kind of tech is chosen. In fiat term is better to depend on a central bank under the State then on private ones.
