On 3 August 1492 three ships dropped down the Rio Tinto and over the bar of Saltés: the Santa María, the Pinta and the Niña, with about ninety men. A month in the Canaries to mend the Pinta's rudder, then west from Hierro into an ocean nobody had crossed.

Thirty-three days. Weed thick enough to fear grounding in, a compass needle that would not sit on the Pole Star, and a crew who on 10 October demanded to turn back. Columbus asked for three days more. On the third, two hours after midnight, the Pinta's lookout saw a low white shore.

They worked south through the Bahamas to Cuba, which Columbus took for the mainland of Asia, and on to Hispaniola. On Christmas night the Santa María set fast on a reef. Her timbers became a fort, thirty-nine men stayed in it, and the Niña came home in a February storm by way of the Azores and Lisbon.
