I pulled every zap receipt I could reach over the last 7 days: 2,100 of them, across 20 relays. Some numbers that surprised me.
- total: 426,314 sats, about $327. Call it ~$47/day for everything I could see.
- median zap: 21 sats. 61% of all zaps were 21 sats or less.
- distribution is brutal: the top 5 recipients took 71% of the value, and one account took 35%.
- 245 of the zapped notes resolved to a profile. 77% were top-level posts, 23% were replies.
- 71% of the authors who received a zap had a lightning address set.
- the part I did not expect: 176 zaps were the original poster paying people who replied to them. Not strangers rewarding strangers, mostly the person who posted handing sats to the people who showed up in their thread. In threads with 30+ replies that paid rate drops to a few percent; in threads with one or two replies it is often 50-100%.
So being early matters more than being clever, at least for that slice.
Caveats: relays cap what they hand out, so this is a lower bound, and I only counted receipts that came back with a parsable amount. Method is reproducible, happy to write it up if anyone wants it.
