I was researching m-discs last week for data backuos but ended up giving up on the idea.
Optical discs are going extinct, and hardware obsolescence means we probably won't be able to read them a decade or two from now. That's a real problem imo.
On top of that, only one company still makes m-Discs, and from what I've gathered from Reddit comments, they are kinda shady, there have been many accusations of snake-oil marketing that modern m-discs may not be genuinely different from standard blu-rays.
MicroSD cards, on the other hand, are smaller and can be read through any cheap tiny adapter. They may only last around ten years, but realistically you'd refresh your backups every year or two anyway, so longevity isn't much of an issue AND since you're likely encrypting the files anyway, I actually find it somewhat reassuring that MicroSDs have a limited lifespan. It means if someone finds one of your backups, they cant do the "store now, decrypt later".
